Description

On January 7, 2025 fires broke out across Southern California and ended with several homes being destroyed, lives lost, and residents displaced in Altadena and Pacific Palisades. I was making dinner for my family on the night of January 10th, a Friday when the melody and words of the chorus to this song appeared in my mind. After dinner, I immediately sat down at the piano in the living room and plunked out the chords and the next day went into the studio and laid down music tracks after designing a piano patch using Spectrasonics Keyscape within Omnisphere. Next came the lyrics, which flowed like a river of cool water dousing the flames inside of me. It was difficult to rhyme the ending words because there are only so many usable options for  the ending words I chose in the context of the message… but somehow it all came together. Within 7 hours I had written, sung, recorded, and produced this song. Every ounce of emotion was captured in the recording of the vocals as I took short breaks to recompose myself in between takes. This was a tough one to sing, given the visuals in my head of the loss and suffering people must have been going through. I hope you feel it when you listen.

Please reach out to your neighbor. Storms will come, and tragedies will occur in this life. Be the light in the dark and be that spark. Not the one that ignites flames of destruction, but flames of warmth and light.

Incredibly soul-touching. Been listening to this for a while now, and i think it’s one of his best works in recent years. You can easily hear the emotion put into the vocals, and the lyrics tell a faithful story to the tragic events in Southern California. The instruments and sound design are very reflective of the tone and atmosphere of the song. That piano opening immediately set the stage for the direction the song was going for, and something so simple like that left such a powerful impression that drove the rest of the song. I think this is an excellent example of how much passion Midihead puts into his music.
